# Liquidity heatmap

> A time-history of the order book rendered as colour — resting size at each price, frame by frame — so the ladder's usually-invisible past becomes a picture of where depth sat, moved and vanished.

---
The order book forgets itself every frame, and the liquidity heatmap is the decision not to let it.

The construction: record the book's updates, reconstruct the ladder frame by frame, and render resting size as colour on a price-time canvas, brighter where more waits. What the [depth of market](/glossary/depth-of-market/) shows as a vanishing present becomes a persistent picture, and questions the snapshot cannot ask become askable: how long did that band hold, did it refill after being eaten, did it march down with price or step away from it. Where the feed supplies trades, executions overlay the display, and the two-layer picture — what rested against what traded — is the heatmap doing its real work.

Its two boundary disputes settle most confusions. Against the [volume profile](/glossary/volume-profile/): the profile is business done, the heatmap is intention displayed, and a blazing level that never trades is exactly the case that separates them. Against the sweep vocabulary's [liquidity pools](/glossary/liquidity-sweep/): pools are inferences, conventional guesses about where stops cluster drawn from price structure with no book in sight, while heatmap levels are displays on an actual ladder. The guess-map and the display-picture are conflated constantly because both are called liquidity, and they answer different questions from different data.

The caveat is the family's, sharpened. Displayed size is real as a display and revocable as a commitment: orders post for visibility and withdraw on approach, the signature this site measures as [quote fade](/glossary/quote-fade/), and deliberately deceptive display — spoofing — is documented and prosecuted on centralised venues. A heatmap is faithful to what was shown and silent about sincerity. And in FX the canvas itself is partial: no consolidated book exists, so the picture is one venue's history, with the majority of resting interest living on ladders the feed cannot see.

Read that way — persistence and refill as the tells, withdrawal as the signature, provenance always attached — the heatmap is among the more honest instruments in this family, because it shows encounters rather than promising outcomes. The [two lenses](/glossary/the-two-lenses/) still apply to every story told over the colours.

## Commonly confused with

Neighbouring concepts that get used interchangeably, and the distinction that actually separates them.

- **[Depth of market](https://hadalinstruments.com/glossary/depth-of-market/)** — The DOM is the book's present — one ladder, one instant. The heatmap is the book's past: the same ladders stacked through time and coloured by size. One is a snapshot to act on, the other a recording to study.
- **[Volume profile](https://hadalinstruments.com/glossary/volume-profile/)** — The profile shows volume that traded at each price; the heatmap shows size that rested there, traded or not. A blazing heatmap level that never fills and a heavy profile node are opposite objects — intention displayed versus business done.
- **[A liquidity pool](https://hadalinstruments.com/glossary/liquidity-sweep/)** — The pools of the sweep vocabulary are inferred — conventional guesses about where stops cluster, drawn from price structure. Heatmap levels are displayed — actual resting orders on an actual book. The map of guesses and the picture of displays answer different questions and are conflated constantly.
- **Proof of intent** — A bright level shows size that was displayed, not size that meant it. Orders can be posted to be seen and withdrawn before they trade, so a heatmap documents the display faithfully while remaining silent about sincerity.

## How to measure it in your own data

A definition you cannot test is a definition you have to take on trust. This is the shortest honest route from the concept to a number you computed yourself.

- **Records you need** — Recorded order-book updates with per-level sizes and timestamps, dense enough to reconstruct the ladder frame by frame — per feed, since each venue's book is its own object and OTC FX consolidates nothing.
- **What you compute** — Render resting size as colour intensity on a price-time canvas; overlay trades where the feed supplies them. The analytical work is behaviour over time: how long levels persist, whether they refill after being consumed, and whether they survive price's approach or step away from it.
- **What the answer tells you** — Persistent bands that hold and refill read as genuine interest; bright levels that dissolve as price nears them are the withdrawal signature — the heatmap's version of quote fade, and the single most important thing the picture can actually show.

## Questions and answers

### What is a liquidity heatmap?

A rendering of the order book through time: each frame's resting size at each price drawn as colour on a price-time canvas, so the history of displayed depth — where it sat, how long it held, when it vanished — becomes visible at a glance.

### Do heatmap levels show where price will go?

They show where displayed size sat when each frame was drawn. Price interacting with those levels is the interesting part, and the interaction runs both ways — levels can absorb price or step away from it — so the picture documents the encounter without pre-announcing its winner.

### Can the liquidity on a heatmap be fake?

Displayed size is real as a display and revocable as a commitment: orders can be posted for visibility and withdrawn on approach, and deliberately deceptive posting — spoofing — is a documented, prosecuted practice on centralised venues. The heatmap shows what was shown; sincerity is not in the data.

### Do liquidity heatmaps work in forex?

They render whatever book they are fed, faithfully. In OTC FX that is one venue's ladder — no consolidated book exists — so an FX heatmap is a partial market's history: real, instructive, and silent about the majority of resting interest that lives on other books.
